• Haiti's upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections have been marred by violence caused by clashes allegedly between rival gangs who are trying to take control of the voting centers, which will be used next Sunday. At least 12 people were killed over the past weekend, authorities have reported.
  
  Election-related violence is nothing new in Haiti. During the first round of the parliamentary elections held on Aug. 9, instability was witnessed all across the impoverished Caribbean nation. The elections had been postponed for nearly four years due to a political showdown between the executive and opposition.
  
  During that time, a total of 2,037 candidates registered to contest the elections, representing 98 different political parties. However, 522 were disqualified in a first instance, leaving 186 candidates for the Senate and 1,329 for the Chamber of Deputies that will contest this Sunday Oct. 25.
