Overview
- Dominican authorities have stripped citizenship from individuals born in the country solely because they have Haitian heritage. As to emulate the precedent set by the former dictator Trujillo, the authorities have threatened to expel these individuals from the country and created an atmosphere of intimidation and fear.
The Coalition is counting on you and your members to join the dozens of professional, religious and advocacy organizations that will be marching under our banner across the Brooklyn Bridge on August 14, 2015.
This demonstration is meant to put the world on notice and ask for an immediate end to the racist and xenophobic policies being perpetrated against people of Haitian ancestry in the Dominican Republic.
The march will start at 9:00 AM from the Prospect Park Grand Army Plaza to City Hall. The Coalition demand that:
- The Dominican government return citizenship to everyone from whom it was taken;
- The Dominican government exercise due process and follow international law in addressing the issue of migrant workers;
- The Dominican government ensures the safety and security of all people of Haitian descent from acts of violence, intimidation, and forcible removal from the country;
- Both the Dominican and the Haitian governments engage in diplomatic relations to address the humanitarian crisis existing in the country today;
- The United States government and the international community exercise all influence to ensure that the basic human rights and civil rights of all people are protected in the Dominican Republic.
The Coalition is asking people of goodwill all over the world to join us in expressing our support and solidarity with the people of Haitian descent in the Dominican Republic.
The Coalition believes that it is our duty to stand up and rally around these righteous demands.
Take a stand against racism and xenophobia on Aug. 14 and protest the expulsion of Dominico-Haitians.
