Overview

  • The best person to be the next president of Haiti is former Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe and for this reason the Haiti Sentinel is proud to endorse his candidacy for President of the Republic of Haiti. Of the 70 men and women who announced their intention to run for Haiti’s highest office, we believe none is more prepared to meet the serious challenges Haiti is facing and move the country forward than Laurent Salvador Lamothe.

The former prime minister served 31 months as prime minister of Haiti under a very hostile administration led by President Michel Martelly. During that time, Lamothe led five different cabinets in which nearly all ministerial appointments were made by the Martelly National Palace and the First Lady’s office. Working conditions over this president’s term are exemplified by, among other incidents, the beating of the Minister of Agriculture by the first lady’s brother, Kiko St Remy, and the beating of the police chief, Godson Orelus, in the National Palace in April 2014.

Laurent Lamothe should be credited for having been an important figure of stability and governance, in which, if not for his leadership, would have seen the situation in Haiti deteriorate far worse than it has. And yet still, in these conditions we can point to some accomplishments of his tenure as Head of the Government which are encouraging for a bright future forward.

Even up until 2011 most Haitians were or knew someone who had been affected by the kidnapping phenomenon. Insecurity was at the top of minds if one were to travel to Haiti but during the 31 months Lamothe was in office there was almost a complete cease of these kinds of crimes.

As head of the Superior Council of the National Police, dozens of kidnapping and racketeering rings were broken up including those of the infamous, Sonson Lafamilia and Clifford Brandt; whom both have close ties to the Saint Remy and Martelly families.
